Adoption-Parenting presentations from Jean MacLeod:

1) ADOPTION-PARENTING YOUR TWEEN
PowerPoint Presentation
Designed for parents of children ages 8-12, but the workshop information is highly applicable
for parenting a *pre-tweenie, a tweenie or a young teen*!
Adoption adds a layer of complexity to an already confusing life event: puberty! How can we guide
the way through new situations and lend a hand without alienating our changing children? How do
we reinforce our family structure, and set the stage for a smooth adolescence? Adoption-
Parenting Your Tweenie addresses issues that pertain particularly to adopted children--change
and transition (middle school!), anxiety, sensory issues, social relationships--and includes
practical adoption-parenting advice and shared discussion. AND as our children change, so does
our parenting role! Giving our children their own set of coping skills and acting as a support team
rather than a project manager causes a shift in our mom and dad identity.
How do we PARENTS handle the growing up years???

2) iWRITE: tweens & teens write about life and adoption
A life-narrative writing workshop for adoptees aged 12-18. Tweens and teens are offered a
creative jumpstart in order to tap into their own ideas, personal voices and life experiences.
Easy to use 'write-your-life' tools help participants turn their thoughts and feelings
into powerful, cohesive life stories.

3) AT HOME IN THIS WORLD: an international adoption story
PowerPoint Presentation
There is strength in understanding where you are from and where you belong, which means our
internationally adopted children will need to forge a place that encompasses two places-
homeland and here / before and after.
How can we empower our daughters and sons to walk between two worlds,
and how do we help them move beyond the conventional understanding of self-identity?

4) BEGINNING ATTACHMENT THERAPY:a parent's guide to asking questions
PowerPoint Presentation
Many children exhibit issues at different 'ages and stages', but parents usually recognize a red-
flag behavior by its intensity and persistence. Worrisome moods and conduct can fall at either end
of the “healthy” spectrum, but what do you do when you aren’t sure? How do you evaluate
behaviors and find appropriate assistance? This workshop covers what adoptive parents need to
know about basic attachment, and how to seek effective therapies.

5) HOMELAND VISITS: Going Back, Moving Forward
The positive impact of preparation for a Homeland Trip is shared in this parent program about
returning to China with an adopted child. Speaker discusses the issues of: readiness and age, a
child's maturity in terms of adoption and travel, parent needs, orphanage and adoption city visits,
and the importance of cultural and emotional awareness on a Homeland Trip or SWI tour.
What to plan for, what to expect, and how does a parent deal with the "unexpected" in China?
